3 WAYS TO GET THE BEST RESULTS FROM YOUR FLOSSING ROUTINE

As your Round Rock, TX dentist, we want to help you get the most out of the time you spend taking care of your teeth both morning and night. Practicing proper technique when flossing is one area where people might be missing the boat and not getting the most out of their time.

#1 Use the Proper Type of Dental Floss

Dental floss comes in as many varieties as you can imagine – waxed floss, flavored floss, un-waxed floss, woven floss, and even coconut oil floss. Choosing the one that works best for you depends on the alignment of your teeth and your personal preference.

Overcrowded teeth– waxed floss or floss tape
Larger gaps between teeth – woven floss (which includes fluoride)

Other preferences, such as flavors, have little impact on the effectiveness and you should choose the one that motivates you to get the job done.

#2 Be Sure to Floss Both Sides of the Teeth

Snapping floss in and out of the teeth quickly is not proper practice and may not remove all of the plaque possible. Think of your floss as a “teeth squeegee” and gently move the floss up and down each side of the tooth on either side of the papilla (the V-shaped tissue between teeth).

#3 Have Enough Floss Ready

You should use enough floss to use a fresh section in between each pair of teeth. Usually, 24-36 inches will be enough to give you fresh floss for every tooth and to prevent spreading bacteria and food particles all over the mouth.

While flossing once per day is recommended, you can floss your teeth anytime you feel like you need to. Corn on the cob, baby back ribs, and popcorn all leave particles between teeth that feel uncomfortable. Floss away and enjoy healthier gums!
