GOT A GAP? WE CAN FIX THAT!

What is a Bridge?

What is a bridge to you? To some, it is a way to get across an obstacle, to others a way to connect. In the dental industry, a bridge is a method of fixing a gap. A bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of a gap- these two or more anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth- and a false tooth/teeth in between. The false tooth/teeth between the two anchoring teeth is called a pontic and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination of these materials. With a 98% success rate, this has become a solution for over 15 million Americans who have experienced the loss of a tooth or multiple teeth.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

  • Restores your smile.
  • Restores the ability to properly chew and speak.
  • Maintains the shape of your face.
  • Distributes the force in your bite properly by replacing the missing tooth/teeth.
  • Prevents remaining teeth from drifting out of position.

If you are looking into bridges as a solution to the missing space in your smile, you will be given three options. A traditional bridge, the most common option, involves creating a crown for the tooth/teeth or implant on either side of the missing tooth/teeth, with a pontic in between. A Cantilever bridge is used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth/teeth. This is no longer a method commonly used; it is also not recommended in the back of the mouth as it can put too much force on the other teeth, causing damage. The final option, known as a Maryland Bonded Bridge (or resin-bonded bridge) is made out of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal or plastic. Wings are attached to the bridge, often on just one side, and are bonded to your existing teeth.
