Stress Free Dentistry
Most people don’t look forward to going to the dentist, especially for more invasive procedures like root canals and oral surgery. Some people actually feel so much anxiety when it comes to going to the dentist for even routine treatments that they skip regular visits. Skipping cleanings and exams can cause even those with great oral hygiene to develop gum disease and tooth decay, which left untreated may cause permanent damage. The dentists at Old Settlers Dental provide a modern and stress-free atmosphere and sedation dentistry to help patients feel more relaxed.
Sedation dentistry uses either oral or IV sedation to help patients feel more comfortable. Those that choose oral sedation will receive a prescription from their dentist for a pill that you will take an hour before your exam. While oral sedation may not put you to sleep and will keep you responsive during the procedure, it may be likely that you won’t remember the procedure once the effects wear off. It is also hard to say how long the effects will last so it is important to have someone drive you to and from the dental office.
With IV sedation, you will be asleep during the procedure, which makes it ideal for more extensive dental work like cosmetic dentistry and oral surgery. During most procedures, your dentist will want you to be in control and awake to answer questions, so it is not a good option for those just needing a cleaning or filling. Since the IV sedation will put you to sleep it is also required that you have someone drive you home afterward.
