Why Do I Need A Dental Implant?

If a lost tooth is not replaced, chewing can become more difficult and places additional stress on remaining teeth, putting them at risk of shifting, cracking, or breaking. By relieving the surrounding teeth of this extra strain, we can reduce the chances of other teeth being affected.

Aside from health reasons, a missing tooth may also impact your self-confidence and alter your social interactions. If you find yourself not comfortable smiling as widely as you used to, covering your mouth when speaking, or self-conscious that people can see your missing teeth, an implant may be worth considering.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

An implant is a new replacement root implanted into the jawbone. The root is small and made of titanium, a safe material that has been used in joint replacement for many years. As the implant heals, the titanium integrates completely with surrounding bone in your jaw.

This process creates a solid foundation for the restoration that will be attached to the post. If you have only one tooth missing, we can restore function and appearance with a single implant and replacement tooth. If several teeth are missing, we can strategically place implants to support a fixed bridge or full or partial denture.

Why Choose Old Settlers Dental For My Implants?

Our doctors have specialized training in the placement of dental implants, and Dr. Lewcock is a Master of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (MICOI). A MICOI is a prestigious, rigorous certification that takes years to complete. On top of showing mastery implants, including 80 completed cases, a MICOI must also participate in regular continuing education courses, prove competency in a variety of cases and problems, and have at least one letter of recommendation from a master or diplomate of the ICOI. This advanced education allows us to handle the implant procedure from start to finish here at our Round Rock dental office and offer modern, conservative treatments to our patients.

Do You Place Implants Or Just Restore Existing Ones?

Not all dentists are trained or set up to place implants, and we want to provide a seamless experience for you. Since we oversee the entire process, you will be working with professionals you already know and trust. You can be confident that we will be with you every step of the way to guide and support you.

What Are The Benefits Of Dental Implants?

Dental implants are an excellent tooth replacement choice for a number of reasons:

Who Is A Good Candidate For Dental Implants?

There are several factors that determine whether or not you’re a good candidate for dental implants. An important requirement is that you have sufficient bone remaining in your jaw to support the implant. If the bone has deteriorated, we may need to perform bone graft surgery.

Your overall health is also an important consideration. Your teeth must be healthy and cavity-free, and you need to be well enough to go through the process. If we find that you have existing dental concerns, we will develop a treatment plan to get your oral health back on track in preparation for implant placement.

How Much Do Implants Cost?

The cost of dental implants range widely depending on your specific needs, with most ranging in the low to mid thousands, including the surgery itself, the post, the abutment (the fixed bridge), and the crown itself. We offer free, no-pressure consultations so you can see what your treatment will cost from start to finish. If the cost is something that you simply cannot afford at this time, we have other options, including bridges and dentures, to serve you in the meantime.

By addressing your missing tooth early on, you’re more likely to have a smooth treatment plan, saving you money, time, and worry.

How Long Does The Treatment Take?

The initial surgery, which secures a metal post to your jawbone, takes the longest time to heal. In order to be sure your implant will be a long term solution, we need to be sure that the post is strong and secure in your jaw. Once we are confident that your bone has healed, we are able to continue on to the abutment and finally the crown. The overall time from initial surgery to being able to enjoy a full smile again generally takes a few months. Dr. Lewcock will be able to give you a more personalized time frame at your consultation.

What Does The Final “tooth” Look Like?

The crown is the visible part of the dental implant, which looks very similar, if not indistinguishable, from a natural tooth. We generally use ceramic crowns, which can be matched to your natural tooth color. You may see some implants that are topped with a gold or silver crown, but our goal is to make your implant look as natural as possible. Some patients even elect to have their entire smile whitened at the same time so that everything has a uniform look.

Once your implant and crown are completed, you care for your implant like a regular, natural tooth. You need to brush your teeth twice a day and after eating, floss daily, and use mouthwash and rinse. Not only will this help keep your mouth healthy and clean, it will also help to prevent future loss of teeth or gum disease. Since your implant is an investment, we encourage careful, daily care and regular exams and cleanings.

How Long Do Implants Last?

This can depend completely on how well the implant is cared for by the recipient. However, with regular, ongoing care, up to 98% of implants last at least 10-15 years. Well-cared for implants can potentially last the rest of your life.

Do You Offer Second Opinions?

Medical decisions can be confusing and at times, scary for a patient to make. If you’ve been told by another dentist that you should consider dental implants, we would be happy to offer a second opinion. Likewise, if you are a patient of ours, we will not be offended if you seek a second opinion elsewhere. In the end, your oral and overall health is the most important factor and we will do our best to provide you the information you need to make a decision about your dental treatment.

What Happens If I Don’t Get A Dental Implant?

The short term effects are generally minor, which may cause people to delay seeking treatment. However, the long term problems are not only cosmetic, but can cause severe complications and problems down the road. Some of the most common complications and effects we see include:

If you wait too long to start treatment, we may not be able to place the implants at all. In order to have long term placements, the gums and jawbones need to be healthy and strong in order to properly support the implants.
