Fillings are placed in teeth once the cavity has been removed. Fillings generally come in two choices: silver fillings and tooth colored fillings. Both are an excellent way to restore a tooth once the cavity has been cleaned.
Silver fillings are the time tested material for fillings. They have been around for a long time, we know they work and we know they can last a long time. The downside, obviously, is they way they look. We generally only offer this choice in the back of the mouth because of that. If you think the sight of these in your mouth may bother you, perhaps tooth colored fillings should be your material of choice.
Tooth colored fillings (or composites) are the metal free alternative in fillings. They are our filling of choice for the front of the mouth, but can also be used for the back. They blend very nicely with your existing tooth structure and are very difficult to see once placed. The one downside to composite fillings is that these generally do not last as long as silver fillings.
